New Students (Beginners)
Getting started is easy. BASIC LEVEL SERIES are usually designated with a "I" after it, such as "Salsa I" or "Waltz I," etc. BASIC LEVEL WORKSHOPS or Sampler Series are usually designated with a "Basic" or "Intro" such as "Intro to Ballroom Dance" or "Black-Tie Basics." Any of these classes would be a great place to start!
TO HELP YOU FIND THESE CLASSES, our printed schedules are color coded with classes perfect for new students to start. Of course, PRIVATE LESSONS are always a great option too! CONTACT US, IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR NEED GUIDANCE. Our Studio Coordinators can guide you to the best class(es) that fit your interests, experience, and schedule.
After You’ve Taken Your First Class at MayI…
So you've completed your first Series, or taken a few private lessons. You realize how fun social dancing is. What should you take next?
The NEXT LEVEL class. Usually designated with a "II" such as "Salsa II" or "Waltz II."
and/or
REPEAT a class, and in fact the best dancers usually repeat their basics in order to really master the material.
and/or
TRY a DIFFERENT STYLE of dance (level 1).
You can learn a dance well just by taking our CORE classes, which all follow this sequential number system. Each dance varies, but typically consist of 3 to 5 core classes that should be taken in sequential order. Once someone completes all the numbered core classes, a “Core Variations” class is perfect to reinforce your fundamentals but with new and fun variations. Core Variations classes are always different so you can repeat this many times and learn many new steps, technique, and stylings each time!
If you want to really excel, complete all the core classes, then continue with the upper level classes -- Int/Adv-Level (I/A) and Mastery-Level (M).
Experienced Students / Dancers New to MayI
Taken dance classes elsewhere, but don't know where to start with us? We find that our classes cover certain important aspects of social dance that aren't included by other studios or teachers, so we always recommend starting with our basics. Our attention to connection, lead/follow skills, and fundamentals is unique and beneficial for all dancers even in these basic classes.
However, if you are confident that you are more advanced in any particular dance, you’ll need to get a MayI instructor's approval to jump into a higher level Core or even an I/A-Level (Intermediate/Advanced), or M-Level (Mastery) class. The most common, and best, way to get instructor approval is to schedule a private lesson. These lessons are at an additional cost, which varies by instructor. Typically, you can get evaluated in 2 to 4 dances during one private lesson.
If a private evaluation lesson doesn't fit your schedule or budget, it is possible to attend one of our dance parties and ask one of our instructors to dance. Before the dance, tell the instructor that you are interested in taking some classes and would like them to do a quick evaluation of you during the dance so they can recommend which classes to take. This would not cost anything (other than the entry for the dance), but there is no guarantee that an instructor will be available to dance or that one dance would be enough to adequately evaluate your dancing.
Once again, if you need any help or have any questions, please contact us. We're here to help!
Class Levels
Core (C)
Where you should start! These classes should be taken in sequential order: For example: Salsa I→ Salsa II→ Salsa III→ Salsa IV→ Salsa Core Variations. It is very common for students to repeat Core classes in order to master the material before they move on. After numbered core classes are completed, it’s common for a student to take “Core Variations” a few times. Some students find the Core Variations challenging enough to take it repeatedly as their monthly class for the entirety of their dance development.
INT/ADV (I/A)
Once successfully completing all of the material in the Core classes for a particular dance, most students can progress to taking ANY of that dance's I/A-level classes in ANY ORDER. Every dance has various number of I/A-level classes. For example, Rumba has about 10, while West Coast Swing has over 40! I/A-level classes come in Series, Workshop, or Special Program form and usually have creative or descriptive titles. Some are offered regularly, some are only offered once a year. An I/A-level class is usually listed on our monthly schedules with an I/A icon next to it.
Mastery (M)
For those that thrive on the most demanding of classes, technique, and a deep understanding of the dances, we offer these high-level classes. After completing several I/A-level classes and/or private lessons, a select few students may qualify for M-level. Instructor approval is required for M-level classes. An M-level class is usually listed on our monthly schedules with an M icon next to it. If registering online, you will need a unique password given by our instructor or management.
Group Lessons
Group Lessons Come in 3 Common Formats:
Series (S): These are progressive multi-week classes (usually 4 weeks) in which each week builds off the previous week’s material. Students should be able to commit to each class meeting. Each meeting of class is typically 50 minutes. Each meeting usually starts with a quick review of the previous week’s material and then new material is introduced that builds off of what has been learned. The class size can vary from 4 to 50, but most classes usually have about 20 participants.
Workshops (W): These are usually standalone sessions typically done in single or multi-hour blocks.
Special Programs (SP): These can be in progressive, one-shot, or weekend-long classes and can include Bootcamps, Intensives, Champion Classes, Retreats, Seminars, and any other class that doesn’t fit into the Series or Workshop designation. Special programs will have separate pricing and often separate registration procedures.
Attire
Shoes: We recommend soles that allow you to slide safely across the dance floor, such as suede, leather, or smooth plastic. Rubber-soled shoes are not recommended. Non-marking soles are required, to keep our dance floor in tip top shape. If you are interested in purchasing dance shoes, e-mail us and we will send you links to popular vendors.
Clothing: Although we don’t have a strict dress policy, here are some guidelines. Weekday classes are usually nicer-casual to club attire, although jeans are fine. Weekend day attire is usually more casual as in nice jeans or workout pants & top. Weekend evenings and special events are usually club or more formal attire. Please be considerate of others when selecting your attire. Sleeved-shirts are highly recommended. If you tend to sweat a lot, a small towel and a change of shirt may be a good idea to bring along. Please note that nightclub locations and other satellite locations may have specific dress code requirements. Our Strictly Ballroom Night Dances require business casual to semi-formal attire.
Role Reversals
There was a time that most males learned the leader’s part and most females learned the follower’s. However, that is history as now we encourage anyone to enroll in whichever role they prefer. Just understand that you should be qualified for the level of class in the role you are planning on. For example, just because you are an advanced leader in Salsa, doesn’t mean you can take Salsa as a follower starting with Salsa II. You should always start at Level I for whichever role you are learning anew.
If you have any special circumstances or need some guidance, please contact us in advance and we will work with you to make sure you're happy. We believe everyone should have a safe, welcoming, and wonderful learning and dancing experience!

Group Class Cancellation, Refund, & Credit Policy
Once registered, students will be charged a $20 administrative fee each time they request any changes to their registration (per change, per class). Students will also have to pay the difference for any class they transfer or add if the new class is priced higher and/or the original classes had early-bird, volume, or other discounts applied.
Any cancellations, refunds, or credits will also incur a $20 administrative fee per class. Cancellations made over 7 days prior to the class start can be refunded, less the administrative fee(s). Cancellations made between 1 and 7 days prior to the start of the first class will only receive a credit (less the administrative fees) to be used for a future class, no refunds.
No refunds or credits within 24 hours of the class start or anytime after the class begins.
Certain classes and programs are no refunds or credits at any time, under any circumstances. These are usually special programs or specific promotional deals and will be marked as such.
We do not allow switching after the first class.
To cancel, the student should contact May I Have This Dance as soon as possible via e-mail or phone.
If a class is cancelled by May I Have This Dance or the instructor, the student will receive a full refund or credit for that class.
May I Have This Dance or the instructor may cancel a class if there are less than 10 students enrolled in that class.
Valid credits are always given in official writing or via e-mail, from a May I Have This Dance management staff. Verbal credits are never given, therefore will not be accepted. To redeem a credit you must provide the credit in writing at the time of your registration.
By completing a registration you are confirming your agreement with our policies. Any chargebacks, cancelled payments, returned NSF checks will be charged an additional $50 per occurrence in addition to the original amount and any merchant service and processing fees.
Make-Up Policy
May I Have This Dance typically runs a particular class only once during the month or semester. Class Series are progressive in nature, so you and your classmates benefit from attending each class. If you miss a class, you may be behind for the next class, which will affect the other students. Therefore we really encourage each student to make every session in a series if possible. If you must miss a class, taking a private lesson (at an additional cost) to catch up is always a good idea, and in some instances may be required. Students who cannot commit to a multi-week series, should consider workshops, private lessons, and the lessons that are part of the dance practices.
Our group lesson Series & Workshops are a tremendous value. Our curriculum and instructors are the best in the area, yet we are able to maintain much lower rates than other studios and dance instructors. Please help us keep our low rates by observing our policies. If you have any questions or concerns about our policies, please contact us! Events and lessons co-hosted or wholly hosted by a non-May I Have This Dance party may have separate and different cancellation and refund policies.
